Beauty Without Cruelty.

Just a few months ago, our fabulous brand RevitaLash® Cosmetics was proudly presented with the “Leaping Bunny” Award signifying that the product manufacturer does not perform testing on animals and conforms to the standard set by the Coalition for Consumer Information on Cosmetics (CCIC) and Cruelty Free International (CFI).

There are several variations on this theme around the globe but the PETA Cruelty-Free Bunny indicates that a company has submitted a statement to PETA asserting that they do not perform testing on animals. There’s also a vegan version of the logo, available to companies who state that all their products are vegan, a trend that is currently gaining ground!

At la Rivière we do our best to ensure that the products we distribute are not tested on animals and in the wake of RevitaLash®’s merit in gaining THE Leaping Bunny Label I thought it was the right moment to give a brief overview of some of the facts and myths concerning beauty without cruelty.

If a product says “cruelty free” or has a bunny on it does it really guarantee that it has not been tested on animals?

Sadly no, as most animal testing takes place at the ingredient level.  Furthermore, some companies contract out the testing.  The only way to be 100% certain a company is cruelty-free is to buy products from companies that have been certified by the Leaping Bunny Programme, which requires that no new animal testing be used in any phase of product development by the company, its laboratories or ingredient suppliers.

The law requires that personal care products and cosmetics must be tested on animals.

This is 100% untrue!! There are sufficient existing safety data as well as in vitro alternatives to make animal testing for these products obsolete.

If a product hasn’t been tested on animals it isn’t safe for humans.

Not so! There are many reliable alternatives available rather than using animals including cell and tissue cultures and sophisticated computer and mathematical models. Companies can also formulate products using ingredients already determined to be safe.

It’s really hard to find products that are cruelty free.

It’s getting increasingly easier.  Many companies are joining the Leaping Bunny Programme each month – including our very own RevitaLash® Cosmetics!  There is now a free Leaping Bunny App available too.  However, if the logo is not visible on the packaging of your favourite product learn to read the fine print and above all … just ask!
